STOCKTON
- Stagg High School's homecoming parade, resurrected last year after a
25-year absence - will once again briefly shut down Pacific Avenue this
afternoon for the school celebration.
Pacific
Avenue from Harding Way to Castle Street will be closed at 1:30 p.m.
until about 4 p.m. The parade is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
Businesses
along that stretch of Pacific will remain open, and parade spectators
are free to use parking lots in the area, which can be accessed by
entering off of Center, Commerce or Allston. Street parking will be
restricted.
The grand
marshal is Dallas Braden, a 2002 graduate of Stagg High and a starting
pitcher for the Oakland Athletics. His major-league career has not kept
him from remembering his hometown roots, as he hosted 226 players from
the Hoover Tyler Little League in June at the Coliseum in Oakland. As a
boy, he'd played in that Little League organization.
Last year, in 22 starts for the A's, Braden went 8-9 and had a 3.89 ERA. He walked 42 and struck out 81.
The
parade will include members of Stagg's baseball, badminton and football
teams as well as the homecoming court and cheerleaders.
Emily
Ballus of the Miracle Mile Improvement District said the parade gives
the school a way to celebrate its accomplishments, adding that Stagg's
varsity football team is 4-0 so far this season. The Delta Kings play
Mills of Milbrae at 2 p.m. Saturday at Chavez High for their homecoming
game.
