In a game of inches, Seth Siddle-Mitchell needed every inch of his
5-foot-11 frame in Friday night's Tri-City Athletic League showdown
between Tokay and Stagg.
On
the first play of overtime, the Tokay senior quarterback dashed and
juked then dove for the end zone, stretching the ball just over the
line and giving the Tigers a 13-6 victory at the Grape Bowl.
Stagg had its own chance to score from the 10-yard line following
Tokay's touchdown, but the stingy Tiger defense stopped the Delta Kings
at the 5-yard line to move to 5-1 on the season and 1-0 in league.
Siddle-Mitchell
and the Tiger offense had success running the option against the Delta
Kings, who were undefeated entering the game. Siddle-Mitchell completed
five passes for 94 yards and ran for another 47. He was at his best in
overtime, as he cut left and shook two Stagg defenders and scored.
"My
linemen made the blocks," Siddle-Mitchell said. "That's the beauty of
our offense. They know what's coming, but they can't stop it."
Tokay
controlled most of the game, gaining 309 yards on offense and holding
Stagg to 136 yards, including a total of -5 yards rushing. Delta King
quarterback Aaron Raya completed 11 of 18 passes for 141 yards with
Tokay defensive back Mikey Pedraza breaking up a handful of his
attempts.
The Tigers twice drove the ball down into the red zone
in the second half, getting down to the 8 and the 3-yard lines, but
came up empty both times. Brett Rivers' 25-yard field goal was wide and
the following 20-yarder never got two feet off the ground.
Tokay
scored on its first drive of the game on a play that was very similar
to the game-winning score in overtime. Instead of running the option
and going around the corner, Siddle-Mitchell found a hole in the middle
and ran untouched into the end zone. The PAT was blocked, but Tokay
went up 6-0 at 6:49 in the first.
Tokay head coach Louis Franklin saw the play work then and decided to use it again in OT.
"They hadn't really stopped it when we blocked everybody," he said. "So
once we got the alignment we wanted, we just ran an option around the
corner and it was wide open. Seth just made a play."
Stagg
finally got on the scoreboard in the third quarter, after struggling to
move the ball all night. With Raya completing screen passes to Theo
Wofford and Matt Hanson for gains of over 20 yards, the Delta Kings
marched 87 yards and scored on a Phillip Laufiso 1-yard run. The
extra-point attempt was no good.
Both defenses stood their ground in the fourth to force OT.
Stagg
fumbled the ball five times in the game and while it recovered four of
them, three came in the fourth quarter and resulted in a loss of 36
yards.
Patrick McCarthy had another solid game for Tokay,
rushing for 128 yards on 16 carries as the Tigers took a big step in
the right direction for a playoff berth.
"This is huge because
we are fighting for respect every week. We have to earn it and I think
we earned it this week, but McNair's not going to be scared," Franklin
said thinking ahead to next week's game. "We have to keep this effort
up week to week. But this is pretty cool. It's definitely exciting."
