| TRACY PRESS - West homecoming comeback falls short |
The Delta Kings from Stagg High held off West High’s fourth
quarter comeback attempt to take a 27-21 win during West’s homecoming
game Friday night.
Stagg
jumped on West’s mistakes in the first half at Steve Lopez Stadium to
take a 21-0 lead at halftime. But with the incentive to preserve its
chance at making the playoffs, the Wolf Pack (1-7 overall, 0-3 TCAL)
put together a passing game that steadily cut Stagg’s lead in the
second half.
In the game’s closing minutes, though, the Delta
Kings were able to shut down a steady drive and hold the Wolf Pack
short of the touchdown they needed to take the game back.
“Offensively
we ran the ball and defensively we were stopping them,” head coach
Steve Lopez said. “Then we would fumble the ball and that hurt, then
we’d give up a big play and that was the first half.”
The problems for West started early, after what promised to be a strong start.
West
collected the ball with an onside kick on the game’s opening kickoff,
and tailback Dexter Alcala led the Wolf Pack on a march up the field.
But Alcala’s fumble on the Stagg 42-yard line gave the Delta Kings’
Matt Hanson a chance to pick up the ball and run it all the way back
for a touchdown.
West looked as if it would score at the start
of the second quarter when Alcala broke away from the Stagg 27-yard
line. He was almost all the way to the end zone when a Stagg tackler
knocked the ball out of his hands and another defender picked it up in
the end zone for a touchback. Three plays later, Theo Wofford ran the
ball 78 yards for a Stagg touchdown.
Alcala said afterward that
it was a tough loss, especially because he had a touchdown in reach
only to see the and the Kings turn the game around.
“I put this
one on me. We practiced hard all week and knew what this game meant to
us, and a potential touchdown, it really hurts our team, especially
when you lose by a touchdown.”
West responded with a drive that
included Alcala making passes to Darin Fleming — one for 34 yards,
another for 20 yards — and running it himself. West reached the Stagg
4-yard line as the half was winding down.
But the Delta Kings’
defense held firm to take over on downs, and on the next play, Stagg’s
Ty Minkin broke through for a 96-yard run down the left side to make it
a 21-0 game at the half.
Stagg started off the third quarter
with quarterback Francisco Ortigoza passing to Nate Davis for 53 yards
to reach the West 1-yard line. West forced a fumble on the next play,
and Gabe Dacasin picked it up to start West’s long push up the field.
Jake
Peterson found wide receiver Kyle Lambert for a series of passes that
put West in range for Alcala’s 9-yard touchdown run, which was followed
by an Adam Crandall kick.
On the ensuing kickoff, Crandall
picked up his own onside kick, and Peterson again made his passing game
work with a 13-yard pass to Patrick Phillips and a 39-yard pass to Kyle
Lambert, who ran it in for the Pack’s second touchdown.
Stagg responded with passes from Ortigoza to Wofford, including a 14-yard pass in the end zone to give Stagg a 27-14 lead.
West
countered with a drive that included an Alcala 42-yard run up the left
side for the Wolf Pack’s third touchdown. Crandall’s kick was good,
cutting Stagg’s lead to 27-21.
West once again tried the
onside kick. Stagg picked it up, but West got it back on a
three-and-out series and drove to the Stagg 24-yard line.
But with less than two minutes on the clock, the Delta Kings held firm, taking back the ball and securing the 27-21 win.
The
loss puts West out of contention for the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs,
but the team will try to make the best of it last two games on the road.
“We’re
just going to play for pride the next couple of games and hopefully
give some experience to the players for next year,” Alcala said.
